Hi, Karen Newman here.

Even for a seasoned entrepreneur, starting a business—any business—is a big challenge. But how many of us are really seasoned entrepreneurs?

Sure, a lot of people want to own a business. I did. The problem was that I didn’t know a thing about starting and running a business. The fact that it was an Internet business made it even more intimidating. I was so not an entrepreneur, or at least I thought I wasn’t.

I mean really—does simply wanting to own a business make someone an entrepreneur?

The answer is simple, and it might well surprise you. The answer, of course, is yes. Anyone who wants to own a business is—by definition—an entrepreneur. And anyone who wants to own a business can. It’s as easy as that.

You just need to know how to do it. You see, if you’re worried about the process, if you’re worried that you don’t know what to do next, paralysis sets in. You wind up doing nothing.

You know what you want. You want your life back.

Maybe you’re stuck in a dead end job that’s sucking the life out of you. Maybe you’re working endless hours and still can’t pay all the bills. Maybe you don’t even have a job anymore and are constantly worried about the future.

And you’ve figured out that the Internet just might provide the answers to your problems. But you don’t know where to begin.

That’s exactly where I found myself.

As a senior executive with Fox Sports Net, I worked on Super Bowl broadcasts, World Series coverage, NASCAR and much more. I was a high-powered, hard-charging corporate exec. A successful woman in a man’s world.

And I had no life.

Apart from the 80 hours or so that I worked every week, I was on call, literally 24/7. Sometimes I had to leave town at a moment’s notice, and wouldn’t come home for a week, maybe more. I was missing seeing my kids grow up. And my husband was a picture on my desk.

I hated it.

So I decided that I needed something else. I decided that I wanted to work from home, be my own boss, set my own hours—and become part of the family again. My family.

The problem was that I made good money. We had become accustomed to my executive level pay and didn’t really want to cut back. So I spent a ton of time looking around for something that would work for me.

The Internet offered promise. It looked like there were people—mostly young—who were making big bucks online doing Internet marketing. They enjoyed a lifestyle that I could only dream about. They had figured out how to make the Internet work for them.

And right there was the problem. I didn’t know any of that. I didn’t know how to be successful online.

I used the Internet to send e-mails and that was about it. I wasn’t exactly young (but I’m not exactly old either—I’m a boomer). I didn’t really understand the technology. I was a workaholic and had always had a real “place of business” to work from, even if it was on the road. And in no way, shape, or form could I ever sell—anything—for a living. In short, I had no clue about what to do next.

Or did I?

Well, this story has a happy ending. And yours can, too.

The reality was that I did indeed have the skills I needed. See, I started out as a freelance technician. And any freelancer knows how to sell, or else they don’t eat. When I thought about it—using all of that television broadcasting equipment—I really did have a knack for technology. I just needed to apply the skills a little differently.

And I was a successful executive, so I knew how to manage things. My time, my business, my clients–everything.

When I thought of my career in these terms, it became clear that I could do this. I taught myself how to take my past and adapt it to the future. Which is exactly what I did, and today my life and career are a whole lot more enjoyable—and successful—because of it.

I created Experience Mapping to help you do exactly the same thing.

Experience Mapping is my process for taking an inventory of your skills, abilities, training, education, experience, and anything else that enables you to earn an income, and then realigning all of those assets and resources in a new career. If you’re thinking about starting a business—but particularly if you’re thinking about starting a business online—you need a copy of Experience Mapping. In the book, I show you, step by step, how to take what you’ve done and what you know and turn it into doing what you want to do.
